NORA
Why was she so stupid? What had she even been thinking? She
couldn’t help but silently berate herself for her naïveté, for being so
desperate to find a Daddy to belong to that she had let herself
believe he loved her. She’d thought he actually wanted her and that he
would be the perfect Daddy she’d always dreamed about. Not only had she
been wrong, she’d been horribly wrong. The realization was like a knife in
her gut. Tears welled up in her eyes as she struggled to come to terms with
the painful truth.
Lifting her hand to the bruise on her cheek, she winced. Her relationship
with Trevor had been over for months, but she’d been trying to make it
work, trying to be better so he would want her again, but really, she didn’t
even know why she’d tried. She hadn’t been in love with him for months.
She’d quickly fallen out of love with him when she’d found out he’d been
cheating on her. She was just so pathetic and needy that she’d put up with it
all and tried to make it work.
After their most recent fight, where he’d hit her with his closed fist and
given her a swollen and bruised cheek, she’d finally decided it was time to
get out. She just hated that the only place she had to go was her best friend’s
house. Not that she didn’t want to see Ellie, because she did. She could
hardly wait to see her. Since Nora had moved away from Seattle, they
hadn’t been able to talk as much as they typically did. Her bestie was in a
new relationship with a Daddy of her own, and she didn’t want to interfere
with the new life she had. And the idea of being around Ellie’s new Daddy,
or any man, for that matter, was absolutely terrifying.
Strangers of any kind terrified her. Heck, even people she knew scared
her. Just because you know somebody doesn’t mean they are trustworthy or
safe. She’d learned that lesson way too many times throughout her life.
At her age, she thought she would have grown out of her fears and
shyness, but it almost seemed to get worse the older she got. Ellie said he
would understand but she was sure he would think she was a freak. Just like
Trevor said she was.
The automated voice on her GPS told her to turn and when she did, she
nearly choked. The row of houses on each side of the street were gorgeous.
Huge, custom houses with pristine yards lined with trimmed bushes and
flowerbeds.
