Drenched in sweat, I woke with a pounding heart. That dream again. It
had followed me for as long as I could remember.
It was worse during the winter months, usually growing in intensity as
the season closed in on the solstice, and ebbed from there.
This year though, it hadn’t shown any sign of diminishing after December
twenty-first. On the contrary, the dream had not only gained in frequency,
but I was now able to see more detail. Either that or I remembered more.
Before this I only ever recalled his red glowing eyes, but now, this morning
I caught a glimpse of his face.

A very handsome face, one I might have been attracted to, had it not been
for his red eyes, pointy ears, and oh yeah, his fangs.
Gasping for breath, I sat up, focusing on the light coming from the
bathroom, which I always left on now, because of the damn dreams.
My hands shook as I fished for the remote, finally finding it buried under
the pillow, to turn on the TV for some background noise. I needed to hear
voices, sounds besides the rushing of blood in my ears and my pounding
heart.
Ever so slowly my heartrate returned to normal, the rushing in my ears
retreated, and I was able to focus on the sounds from the TV.
Eva Bartholomew, my favorite news anchor, was on, talking about the
comet said to be visiting Earth within the next twenty-four hours.
Deep breath in, deep breath out.
I closed my eyes and focused on her voice, letting it soothe me, and not
for the first time this year.
Which was when I realized that my dreams always came at four in the
morning, awakening me way too soon for the day to start and leaving me
too shaken to try to go back to sleep. They were the reason I usually ended
up laying there in some kind of fugue state listening to Eva Bartholomew.
On lucky days I managed to snooze for a few more minutes here or there,
but burning, red eyes followed me most of the time, so I got up to make a
coffee, knowing it wasn’t worth the risk of being revisited by my nightmare.
My arms brushed against my breasts as I threw the blanket off and a
shudder ran through me. What the heck?
My nipples puckered and felt sensitive to the touch and as the adrenaline
spike slowly left my system, I became aware of a pulsing sensation in my
clit. I was aroused!
