***JAYCE***
Jayce sat in the back corner of the room, a scowl on his face, wishing
he was there for a Saturday morning meeting of the single dad’s
club instead of a baby shower. The room was so crowded he could
barely see the happy couple on the other side of the room surrounded by
brightly wrapped packages, Piper’s baby bump plain to see, and he was
beginning to feel like he was suffocating. If not for the fact that Sawyer
really wanted him there he would have skipped the whole thing, but
friendship dictated that he be there, and so he was, but that didn’t mean he
had to enjoy himself.

He knew that he was being a grump, and he was happy for his friends,
he was just feeling a little left out. They’d all left him behind, gone in a
direction he never planned to go again, and he couldn’t help but feel a little
sad that all his friends who used to be part of the club had gotten married.
Things were changing, and even though he told himself that change was
good, he’d been happier with the way things had been and worried that he’d
lose the friendships he’d worked so hard to forge.
“Well, don’t you just look like a ray of sunshine sitting over here in the
corner by yourself,” Noah said, sitting down in the chair next to him. “Why
don’t you come join the fun?”
“I’m not in the mood,” he said, then looked over at his friend. “Baby
showers are supposed to be for women.”
Noah let out a long sigh, “Are you still harping on that?” he asked, then
shook his head. “Never mind, I can see that you’re determined to be a
grump, so I’ll just leave you alone.”
“That’s okay,” he said, getting to his feet. “I’m going to go outside and
get some fresh air. It’s not like anyone is going to miss me.”
“Spoken like a true man child,” Noah said, shrugging his shoulders. “I
don’t know what’s been wrong with you lately, but if some fresh air helps,
then by all means, go for a walk.”
Jayce stomped away, feeling childish, but he didn’t care. It felt good to
vent some of his frustration, and when he stepped out in the fresh spring air,
he felt even better. Looking up and down the street, he took a couple deep
breaths, then took off toward the park, thinking about his favorite bench
under the trees. But as he got nearer, he realized that the park was packed,
and with a sigh of disappointment turned around to take a walk by the river
instead.
It was his second choice, but the river was like home to him. He’d
grown up fishing its waters, wading the deep sections, and kissed plenty of
girls on its banks like most of the boys in town. Keeping his head down, he
walked the two blocks to the trail, hoping that he wouldn’t run into anyone
that he knew, not in the mood to make small talk. Letting out a relieved sigh
