Have you ever coveted a man like he was the most gorgeous pair of peeptoe sandals with a stacked heel you’d ever seen? Or that jacket you try
on once that transforms whatever you’re wearing into style worthy of a
Vogue photoshoot…
I stood by my competition with a smile plastered on my face. My eyelid
twitched—everything would change that night. I had a plan. We all waited
for the same wide shoulders, wrapped up in a fitted suit jacket, to arrive at
the employee party.
“This venue is cute, Raven,” Peggy said to me in her flat voice. “Funky.
The food smells so good.”
Cocking my head, I gave her a slight nod. She’d managed to sound
mocking and curious at the same time, as if I’d just love to ramble on about
the catering challenges so she could tell me how to do it better. We were so
polite to each other that glass could shatter on our brittle smiles.
I handed a name tag to another new arrival walking past us. Peggy was
the head office assistant at Good Samaritan River Gorge Hospital, where we
both worked, and my number one rival for the most eligible bachelor in
town, Travis Dashiell. She stood by the front doors next to me, dressed in a
pink skirt and sweater that showed off her curves, waiting for him to arrive.
My foot wobbled a little in my heeled boot. I hadn’t slept well the night
before—or for a while—mostly because of the hair-raising grunting and
wall tapping of my stalker neighbor. He hadn’t been having sex with
someone, that was his idea of flirting with me. I shared an apartment wall
with him, and it was pushing me over the edge.
Also, I’d had an epiphany about Travis: he could take slow burn down
to a micro flame. I had to show him there wasn’t an iota of rejection in me
and lure him closer. My romantic habits were more swashbuckling
conquest, like a pirate queen after treasure. That part of myself had to be
tied down with knots and stowed in the brig.
Marla, one of the pediatric nurses, smiled gently at Peggy and me. She
was such a peacemaker. “It really is nice. Fall themes are my favorite.”
“Thank you.” I took a sip of my pumpkin-spice White Russian cocktail.
“The hospital board decided on quarterly parties. I’m holding them to it.”
Peggy sniffed, staring at my drink. “It won’t last. Some drunk will mess
it up for all of us.”
“Excuse me,” I said, eyeing the food tables. “I’m going to make sure
they remembered to warm up the marionberry and apple pies.”
As I walked away, they kept their vigil at the main doors into the Old
Cannery Concert Hall. I’d rented the event space to host the gathering. It
was an old cannery building turned into an entertainment venue, referred to
as The Ruins.
