LILY
PRINCIPAL HARRISON SAT BEHIND her desk, her posture rigid and
her expression stern, as she looked at the piece of paper in front of her.
The importance of the detailed incident which led us to her office seemed to
hang in the air. She raised an eyebrow and addressed my younger brother,
Nate, who sat slouched in his chair with a bored expression on his face.
“Is there anything you’d like to say before I read this out loud?” Her
tone was firm and sharp.
Nate’s response, however, was quick and unapologetic. “He deserved
it.” He leaned back even further in his chair, seemingly unfazed by the
potential consequences of his actions.
I couldn’t help but notice how much Nate reminded me of myself
when I was younger—blunt and fearless, often getting myself into trouble
because of it. A small part of me glowed with pride over our similarity, but
the responsible adult in me disapproved.
As soon as Principal Harrison’s pale blue gaze met mine, I could tell
that she recognized it, too…and that she was liable to deal with it the exact
same way she always had. There was a familiar storm brewing in those
eyes, one that mirrored the same look she used to give me all those years
ago: a tangle of frustration and a hint of pity.
I’d been the bearer of that look more times than I could count, but
now it settled on me for a far different reason. I’d been getting that look
almost every day these past couple of months since I became the legal
guardian of my younger siblings.
“This is your responsibility,” said that look. “You should have known
better.”
Despite my attempts to brush the gentle judgment off, I couldn’t
ignore how much it bothered me. It cut deeper than I cared to admit; she
might as well have written out a list of my shortcomings and tacked it on
my forehead. Then taken the weight of my new role as stand-in parent and
shoved it down on my shoulders.
Two seats away from us, Jackson let out a small, pained whimper at
Nate’s words, curling his fingers tightly around his elbow—the one that
didn’t have a single speck of blood or even the lightest of scrapes on his
skin, might I add—as if to remind them that he was in fact experiencing a
great deal of discomfort. The agony in his expression was palpable as he
clenched his teeth, as if trying to hold back any further cries.
“Nathan is right, ma’am. I shouldn’t have bothered him in the first
place. None of this would have happened if I hadn’t annoyed him.” He let
out another whimper to punctuate his pathetic whine, but I couldn’t help but
notice the wicked smirk beginning to form on his lips. His mother quickly
swooped in, pulling him close and whispering words of comfort and
reassurance.
Are they for real? He isn’t even trying to act believable!
Principal Harrison’s hands curled into tight fists, crinkling the paper
between her fingers.
