I didn’t want to think. I didn’t want to feel. I didn’t want to get off the
bus. None of it. Thinking and feeling only meant pain, and I was so sick
of that.
Fresh, humid air reached my nose as I stepped on the concrete outside,
long-buried memories flooding back to me. I bit my lip to stop it from
shaking and brushed my fingers against the pendant around my neck,
engraved simply with J & S. It had been an entire year since I was last
home. An entire year since I lost my twin brother.
James had always been my rock, the one with me through thick and thin.
With him gone, the only family I had left was my dad. I loved him, but our
relationship was strained at the best of times.
I kept my head down as I walked down the road, passing the Welcome to
Waterbury, WA sign at the end of the bus station. The strap of my bag dug
into my shoulder, and my hair fell over my face to create a sweaty but
necessary barrier between me and the world.
A few minutes later, I stopped outside my childhood home. Everything
looked just like I remembered it. The tan siding on the Cape Cod-style
property was peeling, the grass needed to be mowed, and the pots by the
front door all held long since dead plants. The hills weren’t quite able to
cover the view of Mount St. Helens in the background, the white and gray
tips peeking over the tree line.
The rose bushes that lined the path up to the steps were the only things
that seemed looked after. Mrs. Johnson, our neighbor across the street,
always took care of them. With a quick glance over my shoulder revealed
her watching me from her window. I gave a brief wave, then turned around
and dragged my feet up the old wooden steps, not in the mood for a
conversation about flowers, the weather, or anything deeper.
The key was in the same spot as always, under the plant pot at the top of
the steps. The knot in my chest tightened and my nausea grew stronger as I
swung the front door open. My bag fell to the hardwood floor with a thud,
the familiar stench of alcohol hitting me like a punch to the stomach with
the first inhale.
“Dad?” I croaked out into the silent and desolate house, then cleared my
throat to try again. “Dad, are you home?” My voice echoed down the
corridor as I pulled my shoes off.
