There was never a shortage of strange men in Princess Cordelia’s

her current suitors.

--- --- --- --- ---
With a mop of dark, almost unruly hair, dirty face, and tattered
clothes, he could easily be mistakable for a mere commoner and not some
high born from the neighboring isles. Prince Toubain, the youngest of
twelve brothers, and easily the most predictable.
Cordelia sighed, shifting on her side of the bed to cover more of
herself as she yawned heavily. Her eyes were half-lidded, mouth tasting like
the dry deserts to the west. He groaned, stretching so far that his feet hung
off the foot of the bed. She waited a few heartbeats before she grabbed the
fabric of the blanket, trying to slide from the bed. He groaned, turning over
so that his arm rested around her waist, his legs tangling in hers.
Cordelia huffed, brushing him off before she slithered from
underneath the blankets. Naked and cold, she tip-toed across the room, the
floorboards creaking underneath her weight. Toubain stuttered in his sleep,
kicking the rest of the blankets and spreads, exposing him for all to see.
Normally, the sight of any naked man-made Cordelia’s knees weak and
eager to frolic beneath the sheets, but this time it made her stomach clench.
A knock on her door made her jump in fright. She quickly dove for
the blanket, throwing it over the prince before she hurried over to the door,
opening it just enough for her head to poke through. She was eye to eye
with her brother, Max, who was standing on his tip toes to see what was
going on behind the door. Frustrated, Cordelia shooed him away, closing
the door behind her as she placed her hands on her hips.
There were a thousand different ways she could play this out, and a
thousand ways that could result in Prince Toubain’s death. Being the
youngest of his siblings meant that he would never inherit the throne, but
with Cordelia being primed to be the next queen of Silver, she couldn’t be
seen with anyone such as him.
Her mother would no doubt have a fit if she saw him.
Most people feared her mother. Many used to spin tales of how the
queen would make any man cower at her feet, and that not a single man
ever gained the courage to ask for her hand in marriage. But Cordelia’s
father—a man with no title and of little importance—had waltzed in and
asked if she would marry him. It was a bet, he would tell them all during
the candlelit dinners, and he had never believed that she would ever say yes
