A short sharp scream pierced Taj Jones ears and made him wince. His
brother’s mate, Lori, stumbled away from him, the color draining from her
face, taking his hope with it. With his hands out in front of him, palms up,
he slowly backed down the corridor away from her.

“It’s okay Lori. I won’t hurt you.”
“I…I know you won’t.” Her forced smile didn’t convince him any more
than her words did.
Nothing would ever change. He’d never expected it to. Hoped it might,
but deep down knew it wouldn’t.
“What have you done, Taj?” His brother’s voice was calm but he knew
him well enough to notice the small hint of fear underneath.
He pressed himself against the wall so Jared could see that Lori was
unharmed. Never a good idea to get between a tiger and his mate.
Especially when you were the one responsible for inflicting pain and trauma
on both of them.

“Nothing. I didn’t know she was down here or I would’ve waited for her
to leave.”
“It’s okay. It’s not his fault. I got a surprise, that’s all.” Lori slipped by
him into her mate’s arms. Jared held her tight and pressed his face to her
hair, his focus not leaving Taj until they turned and walked down the
corridor, up the stairs and out.
Tension released from Taj’s body on a great gasp of air and he slumped
against the wall. He dropped his head to his hands and rubbed his tired
eyes.
He couldn’t do this any longer. The pretense that everything was going to
be all right, that they could get on with their lives, was over.
It was never going to be all right.
The things he’d done, the lives he’d destroyed. They’d all be better off
without him.
He hurried to his room at the end of the corridor, closed the door behind
him and rested his spine against it. He ran his hand over his face and took a
deep breath.
For seven months he’d been meek, polite, tried to keep out of the way of
the most traumatized, trying to make it work. But no matter how much he
tried, no matter how much his circus family tried, history couldn’t be erased
or forgotten. It was there in the way their eyes filled with wariness and
suspicion when they watched him, the way they flinched when he spoke,
the way they’d back away from him, or, like just now, scream and freeze in
fear.
