Gem – 2022
I hated Mondays at the best of times, but today I’d woken up with the kind
of sludgy headache that I knew I would have difficulty shifting. The
thought of standing in front of my class of thirty-two, switching on my
brightest smile and attempting to teach them about the Tudors was already
making my heart sink, despite loving the little buggers desperately. Why
were the weekends so short?

--- --- --- --- ---
I stared into the mirror. A smear of lip-gloss and flick of mascara weren’t
enough to lift my flat and colourless reflection. My frizzy ginger curls
refused to be tamed by my hurried ponytail, and my skin was so ghostly
pale that I swear I was glowing.
Giving up on my appearance, I instead checked my phone for updates,
while slugging my too-strong tea. Usually there was a flurry of bright and
positive social media posts from ‘friends’ desperate to show that their lives
were exciting and fulfilling. But it was the negative posts which, more often
than not, caught my eye. Call me cold-hearted, but I was a sucker for a
more realistic entry. What did the Germans call it? Schadenfreude –
enjoying someone else’s misfortune.
One particular post this morning had lots of exclamation marks and sad
little emoji faces, guaranteed to grab my attention.
Marshbrook Lane closed!!!!! Avoid!!!
It was typed in a hurry by Matty101, a regular poster on the neighbourhood
group. I’d never met him, but I imagined he was the type of fella who stood
glued to his window, waiting for bad things to happen.
Be careful out there everyone!
There has been a car crash on Marshbrook Lane. Just one car is involved. Looks
pretty nasty. Suspect a drunk driver. Possibly a boy racer hitting a tree. Either way, I
hope they’re OK.
Marshbrook was the country road that looped around the town of
Crowbridge, and my main route into work. Now I was going to have to take
a horrible detour, through the congested town centre, to avoid it.
Crowbridge was a new town that had been expanded over the years. I had
lived here all my life but at times I was quite bored of the place; the only
good thing about it was that it offered a convenient commute to both
London and Brighton.
‘This always happens on a Monday. I bet some idiot was speeding again,’
I said, resisting the temptation to type out an exasperated reply. After all,
someone was hurt.
Richard, downing a protein shake by the sink, had his gaze fixed on his
own phone, a tiny frown etched on his face.
‘You don’t know that, Gem. It’s an awful road, so many blind spots.’ He
thumped his glass down and swiped at his face. ‘Two of our students have
been hurt there recently, caught out by the bends – or for all you know, a car
might have been forced to avoid an animal or something.’
‘Yeah, well, that’s not the point…’
‘I’m sure they didn’t crash to inconvenience you,’ he replied mildly.
‘Whatever – now I’ll have to leave earlier to make sure I’m on time.
There are always tailbacks through the High Street, and I bet the level
crossing is down.’
