RIAH
The only thing worse than having bad style is having no style.
At least that’s what my manager, Claude, seems to think. And my
boyfriend, apparently, since he decided it was important enough to
warrant flying from New York to his Malibu house for an emergency
meeting to discuss it.

Though, he can’t think it’s that important since he disappeared to take a
phone call ten minutes after we arrived. He didn’t stay long enough to see
the rebrand options that Claude had his team draw up.
Not like he’s missing anything. They’re a real snoozefest.
Or maybe I’m out of touch because Claude seems really excited about
them. “I like this look, personally.” He points to an AI-rendered version of
me looking like I stepped out of an episode of the Gilmore Girls. “Girl next
door. Real down to earth. Kind of a brunette Madilyn Bailey. We could try
to set up a duet with her, even.”
I glance over at my sister, Whitney, who doesn’t look up from her
phone, but her eyebrows raise, and I’m sure she has capital T—Thoughts.
“I’m not sure.” I wish I had a better instinct for branding. “Does
Madilyn Bailey really match the vibe of my latest material? You do realize
‘Finger Painting’ is about alone time.”
Claude isn’t fazed. “Colbie Caillat’s Bubbly song is about a full-body
orgasm. You can have a good girl image and sing the dirty songs just fine.”
“Really? That’s what that song’s about?” I mentally skim through the
lyrics that talk about feeling good from head to toe. Huh. Who knew?
“Regardless, I don’t really think that’s my sound.”
“So we rough the look up.” Pushing the image aside, he reveals another
version of me, this one with a blunter haircut and vampy makeup. “We’ll
get you on a song with Olivia Rodrigo instead. She’s higher profile, too.
Better for your career.”
I bite back a laugh. “Olivia Rodrigo isn’t going to do a duet with me.”
When I was coming off a hit record in my teens, maybe she would have,
but not now. Turns out you can’t take four years off in this business to raise
your sister and expect to find an audience waiting. The comeback album I
released two years ago was practically a flop, and I’m pretty sure my label
would have dropped me from my contract if Hunter hadn’t come onto the
scene.
“Sure, she will. You have influence now.”
Money, he means. Hunter’s money.
From the couch behind us, Whitney lets out an exaggerated sigh.
“Olivia Rodrigo? Do you even listen to the music my sister writes?”
I knew she was paying more attention than she let on.
She tosses her phone on the coffee table and comes over to join us at the
bar. Then she peers over the images with a frown. “Why are you trying to
make her into anything at all? Why can’t Riah just be herself?”
That’s the question of the year. Not a question I’d voice out loud, but
one I frequently ask myself.
I know the answer, obviously. I understand marketing. I know how
promotion works.
