Scott idled in the driveway and looked ahead to his house, then over at the
German Shepherd sitting in the passenger seat of his jeep. Kahn, so-named
by his handler, Tyler, was panting and drooling with the biggest, goofiest,
dog grin on his face.

“She’s gonna kill me; you know that, right,” he told the dog as he
rubbed him real good on the head. “Bringing you home without a moment’s
notice.”
Khan looked toward the house and let out an excited whimper as his
tail thumped against the leather seat.
They’d just returned from Walter Reed where he’d been visiting his
buddy Tyler after the guy had called early that morning demanding to have
a conversation in person. Tyler had been a bomb disposal expert before an
IED hit made him an amp like Scott. Tyler’s injuries were much more
extensive than his own. The kid had lost his right leg above the knee, his
left below and also his lower right arm. Kahn, a bomb-sniffer, had also been
injured in the explosion. After Khan’s wounds were healed, he was retired
and they’d allowed him to live with Tyler in the barracks once he was able
to care for the dog. It wasn’t uncommon for retired dogs to be adopted by
their handlers, and Tyler had such a special bond with Khan. Luckily, after
several visits to his buddy, Khan had grown fond of Scott too.
And now Kahn was Scott’s dog.
He scratched his beard and debated how to introduce Tori to the dog.
When he’d woken up that morning and driven to Bethesda, he’d been sick
with worry about Tyler. Hadn’t even occurred to him that he’d be returning
home with a pet. He was still a little shocked how that had happened. While
he scratched Khan’s back, his mind mulled over the morning’s visit with
Tyler.
“Hey, man!” Tyler had said through his thick, Georgia accent as he’d
opened the door, grinning at Scott. “Come on in.”
Scott had patted him on the shoulder as he walked into the apartment
and Khan ran right up to greet him, standing at attention next to Tyler with
his head tilted to the side waiting for affection. “Hey, buddy.” Scott knelt
down on his left knee and pet the beautiful dog as it licked his face.
“He likes you,” Tyler had said, nodding at Scott.
“And I like him; he’s a badass motherfucker. Aren’t you, Khan?” Scott
ruffled his black fur and stood. “So, what’s up? You said it was important.”
To his relief, Tyler was still grinning from ear to ear. “Good news I take it,
from the grin that’s plastered on your face? Your phone call had me
concerned.”
“Want a drink?” Tyler walked to the fridge and grabbed a beer.
“Nah, I’m good, but thanks.”
“Have a seat.” He nodded to the small sofa in the little living area as
he tucked the beer into his right armpit under his stump, twisted the top off,
and took a swig, sitting down across from Scott.
“How’re the new legs treating ya?” Scott nodded toward his two new
prosthetics.
