Author’s note: this book contains crossover scenes and situations with
Sinful Mates, but the timeline of Festive Mates extends beyond the
CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS and Mariah fucking Carey songs. I swiped my hand
down my face and groaned. Someone kill me. I might get lucky on that front
if my idea fell through, and Slade iced me for failing this venture.
Definitely not my favorite time of year. Busiest time in the Underworld
when thousands of souls packed the Judgement Hall, delaying the process for
weeks. Idiots speeding to make Christmas dinner or get to the mall before it
closed to get that one last present. Family arguments setting off heart attacks.
Head injuries for poor sods who slipped on an icy sidewalk on their way
home. Or in the southern hemisphere’s case, like in Australia where we lived,
drowning in the pool from alcohol intoxication or choking on a fucking fly.
Yep, it happened.
Brothers bustled into the meeting room for church Slade assembled to
discuss the proposal I came up with to get the Wolves’ dirty money off our
hands. Beer, hard cider, and whisky awaited them on the table, as well as
snack platters Rusty’s wife prepared for us.
Aaliyah joined us for the first time in weeks to show support for me. A
few assholes muttered at her arrival, and Slade slapped the back of their
heads to shut them up. She sat at the table beside Castor and me, showing
Slade tossed a slice of salami into his mouth, blue eyes dark as coals,
warning me this better get voted through.
Memories of how this scheme came about resurfaced like it was
yesterday. Slade barged into my office demanding to know why I paid off our
debts with the Wolves’ money earned from their porn and snuff business.
“We’ve got blood money on our hands because of you and Genius,”
Slade snarled at me, smacking me in the jaw, pissed because Castor and I
went above his head to settle the club’s debt.
I crunched him in the nose and sent him reeling. “And we didn’t from the
guns and cocaine we ran for the Egyptian mafia?”
Castor burst into my office, breaking us apart to cool us off.
Slade jammed me in the chest with a finger. “Get the dirty fucking money
off our books!”
Asshole was still sore that Castor and I saved his ass, and the club’s.
“We’ll do a fundraiser or some event to wash the club’s hands off it.”
Cleanse our sinful souls and consciences with a good deed to balance the
Maat, avoiding the foul eyes of the gods turning on us.
Slade scrubbed his chin, considering it, the bond fiery and drier than the
Sahara. “Good idea, asshole. But the members have to be fully behind it.”
My mind returned to the present at Slade’s smash of his gavel. His smoky
voice ran through the reason for gathering everyone, pressing the need for the
club to get into the community spirit. Gratitude crashed in my chest that he
left out the part about Castor and my involvement with the dirty money.
Protecting my reputation after my demotion. Again.
