The Druids’ Circle
The woman appeared in the doorway so suddenly, Tony’s heart skipped a
beat. With the afternoon sun streaming behind her, the edges of her form
were fuzzy, as though she had emerged from another world. The soft green
garden beyond shimmered in the summer heat, making her dark form even
more eerie.

She took a step forward. She was no sinister changeling from ancient
England, but a grim-faced middle-aged woman, with a grey bob, tweed
skirt and superior air. In her arms was an unruly mass of twigs and
wildflowers.
“Hello,” the word was sharp, “I understand you have just moved in. I’m
Prudence Russell-Browne.”
“Tony Mullen,” he offered his hand.
Prudence narrowed her brown eyes as if she expected a different
response.
“Yes, I’ve just moved down from London,” Tony went on.
Prudence stared around the impressive hall. The house was a Grade II
listed Georgian manor. Pleasing to look at, although there was still work to
do on the electricity and the plumbing, as Tony had discovered in the two
weeks since he had moved in.
Prudence continued to stare imperiously and he again had the feeling
there was something he did not know.
“I grew up in this house,” she said at last, “My people owned most of
the land in this district. My father was justice of the peace and master of the
hounds.”
Tony suppressed a smile. The house was in a surprisingly wild and
isolated valley on the edge of Gloucestershire, and he’d already
encountered a few of these old rural types, with their zealous obsession with
the past.
“We were the Russell- Brownes,” Prudence said simply.
“Would you like to take a look around the place?”
That appeared to be the wrong answer. Prudence raised her chin a little
higher.
“I was only on my way past to collect wildflowers. My mother always
had wildflowers in the hall,” Prudence glanced at the shining hall tables. A
strange expression came over her face as she stared ahead.
Tony followed her gaze. A window at the end of the hall looked onto
the terrace lawns and a circle of dark trees.
“I see no one has touched the druids’ circle,” Prudence smiled.
“Those trees?”
“Yew trees.”
“They block the view don’t they?”
He must have committed another rural sin, for Prudence’s tone was
even sharper, “Those trees are said to have been here since time began,
when this whole area was covered by forest.”
“Since time began eh? That would be going back a bit.”
“They were part of an ancient grove, where the druids once practiced
their arts.”
