Thirteen years later
My pulse quickens as I look through the scope of my modified sniper
rifle. Lying on the roof of this high-rise building, I run through all the
variables involved in this hit.

Excitement vibrates through every fiber of my being. I need this one. I
compose myself as I prepare for what’s about to happen. Over the years, I’ve
honed my skills, perfecting them for this very moment.
I look through the scope and see my target approaching, three miles out. I
take several deep breaths to calm myself. I can’t get this wrong because it’s
too personal to fail.
I open my eyes and steady my finger over the trigger. So many things can
go wrong, but I’ve been doing this for years and I’m prepared for every
possible outcome. I insert my Bluetooth earpiece, dial my phone, and watch
as the target speeds toward me.
He becomes crystal clear through my scope, as if he’s right in front of me.
“What?” Ronan answers as he sits in the back seat and casually turns to look
out the window.
“You won’t escape me, Ronan.”
Sheer terror washes over him. “Turn the car around!” he yells at his driver.
I smirk as I watch him scuttle toward the middle of the back seat in an
attempt to duck for cover. “That won’t save you.” I depress the trigger and
hear the lovely sound of the bullet scraping through the chamber. Part of me
is worried I’m off on my calculations, but when I see the bullet break the
glass of the car and Ronan’s head explode toward the rear window, I know
I’ve annihilated my target. “I love you, Dad,” I whisper. I’ve now taken my
vengeance for my father’s death.
I’ve carried the burden of Ronan Murphy for thirteen years. I’ve felt
nothing but hatred and venom for him, but he’s been in hiding for many
years. I lower my head to the ground as an overwhelming warmth radiates
through my body. I’ve wanted this for so long, and now that it’s all over, it
feels almost surreal. I did it. I finally ended the life of the man who ordered
my father killed and changed the trajectory of my life forever.
I lay on the rooftop for what feels like hours, watching the aftermath of my
kill and allowing the euphoric sensation of revenge to sweep over me. Today
is the best day of my life. Not only is it my twenty-eighth birthday, but I
finally killed Ronan Murphy. My phone dings and I touch the earpiece.
“Yeah.”
“How did that feel?” Agent asks.
I roll onto my back and stare up at the crystal-clear sky. Smiling, I relax
my hands on my stomach. “I’m kind of lost for words,” I say.
“You? The great 15, lost for words? In all the years I’ve worked for you,
I’ve never known you to be lost for words,” Agent playfully mocks me. “I bet
it felt good though. Tell me it felt good, right?”
