Natalie Spence sat at a coffee shop in town located only a few miles
outside pack territory. She is the daughter of the aging alpha, Grant
Spence, and is deeply loyal to his beliefs and values. That meant she
rarely went outside the territory, but she enjoyed getting a little bit wild every
now and then. Her dream of traveling and seeing the world was just that, a
pipe dream. Her father would never allow her to go, even with guards, due to
the risk of danger for his precious little girl.
The town offered views she rarely observed inside the confines of the
pack’s land. Everyone in the area she reigned over as princess was, of course,
a wolf shifter, and they knew who she was and treated her as such. The
concept of royalty had initially been appetizing, but Natalie had found the
idea of it all had gone stale. She never felt she was living her life. It was all
just handed to her by people who were being paid to care for her.
She was sipping her hazelnut coffee when she heard her phone buzz on
the table in front of her. She sighed, then clicked it open to find an urgent text
from her father.
Your brother has gotten himself in deep again, Nat. Meet me in the woods
just outside the territory, a few miles north, near the apple-shaped rock. You
know the place.
Natalie’s mind began to swirl with the ideas of what her brother did this
time. She empathized deeply with her father, having to keep his son out of
trouble when it appeared Jeremy kept trying his best to get in trouble. It must
have felt like a losing battle for her father. She knew the place, and she also
knew her brother, Jeremy Spence, insanely well. He hadn’t taken quite as
well to the prince hood position in the way Natalie had. She loved her father
dearly and would do anything for him. Some often found her submissive
nature to be expected from a woman. But Natalie always used that
expectation in her favor.
Jeremy was a man, so more was expected of him, and that was what she
believed caused him to falter. He lashed out in ways that made her father’s
blood pressure rise, often putting the family name and the pack’s reputation
in jeopardy. She wasn’t surprised to find that he had managed to do it once
Natalie left the quaint coffee shop. The chimes on the door and the sweet
smile the server gave her as she was leaving made her heart ache a little. Why
couldn’t she ever just sit in her special coffee shop and dream of places she
would never see? No, she had to leave to help her father right now, all
because of Jeremy. She climbed into her car and placed her phone on the
dash, dialing her father’s number as she pulled out of the parking lot at the
twinkling of dawn.
