I FLAP MY WINGS with great force as I lower myself onto the mound of
the volcano, wondering whether those of us who are gathering around the
god machine will finally come to know the pleasure of meeting one’s mate.
The three suns shine their light and warmth over my broodmates, my
silver scales, and the lush greenery of the island as a cool breeze makes my
long red loincloth and armbands with yellow ends dance in it.

This place
reminds me so much of our jungle, I’d nearly forgotten we’ve traveled such
a long way from it. Were it not for these leviathan-infested waters, I could
easily see myself creating a new nest here in which to raise my brood with
my future mate, but whether I shall even be so lucky as to meet them in this
life is yet to be seen. And just as the thought of taking on a mate brings
warmth to my chest, so does the unease of meeting with the other tribes
make me itch to reach for the hilt of my lance that is strapped to my back
with vines. Hopefully, there won’t be a need for bloodshed this cycle of the
nearest sun. After all, for the first time in generations, the dra’ghon, the
dainosahauri, and the leviathans all share a common goal.
Now that my broodmates and I have come of age, so has come the time
for us to separate from the rest of our families and form a new village where
we would start our own . . . or so it would have been if the gods had blessed
our tribe with females this generation. We thought perhaps the four of us
would merely grow to burn for each other as we matured, but if that were
the case, the leaf marks on our chests would be engulfed in flames by now.
With all of my heart, I hope the gods will finally answer our prayers, for
they had taken pieces of our clothes and flesh many farthest-sun cycles ago
and told us to return here at this very moment. It is our duty to make sure
our proud dra’ghon blood continues to flow into the future. However,
gazing upon the unenthused faces of most of my broodmates, I fear I may
be the only one who truly understands the importance of this cycle of the
nearest sun. Worse yet, perhaps I am the only one who still holds hope that
the gods have not forsaken us.
