A ll Gemma had wanted for years was to live in the North Woods. The
remote wonderland of moose-filled forests and pristine waterways had been a
fantasy since she had visited for the first time in her teens. And she was
finally there. Looking around the site of the cabin she had rented, she felt
calm for the first time since before her mom became ill. She had barely even
smiled in all that time, but now she felt the peace she deserved.
She sat on the balcony of her room which overlooked the campsite below,
which was bustling with human life. Her coffee was hot, her croissant was
fresh, and the sights of Maine were as beautiful as they had ever been. Even
though she missed her mom more than anything, she could still enjoy life as
it was given to her.
She scanned the news website on her phone for anything interesting.
Politics, music, and sports were all things that put her to sleep. Give her a
chance to see an opera, and she would be there, but as for most things in life,
she remained on the outside. When she turned to the help wanted section,
something made her pause.
HELP WANTED: NANNY
Father of two young boys needs a nanny urgently!!!
She skimmed through the rest of the ad: competitive rates, help from personal
chef and cleaners, and two wonderful boys to nanny. It sounded like a dream
to anyone who wanted it. She put the paper down and gazed out into the
Nursing had been her career for the last few years. Her mom got sick
when Gemma was in high school, and Gemma finished her schooling with a
two-year nursing degree. It was all she needed to be her mother’s caretaker
and all she wanted from life while her mother was still alive.
But now she was on her own with no plans and nothing to do. Maybe
nannying two wonderful young boys was something that could turn her life
around. She filled out the application and sent it.
Not a minute after she hit send, her phone rang. When she picked it up, a
harried voice rang out.
“Hi, is this Gemma? Rus, no, get down from …”
Gemma felt her brow crease. “Yes, this is Gemma.”
“Hi, it’s Dylon … from the ad about the nanny … Ron, don’t!”
“Is this a bad time?”
“Apart from all the good times, yeah.” Dylon’s voice was low and
smooth, the aural equivalent of sipping a good brandy. Gemma had good
feelings about the job already.
“I’m calling about the nanny ad,” Dylon said.
“Sounds like you need some help.”
Dylon’s answer was a string of questions, each one sounding more and
more desperate. “When can you meet me? Can you start today? Do you need
to give notice?”
“I can meet you now,” Gemma said evenly, trying to reassure him with
her tone. “I can start whenever. I don’t need to give notice.”
Dylon sighed in relief. “You should come by my house.”
