“Livin’ La Vida Loca”—Ricky Martin
(Rick Dee’s Weekly Top 40)
Scarlet Stone
“Get up, little mono,” my boyfriend says, pulling the blanket off me.
I squint up at him through sleep fogged eyes. I heard the phone ring
earlier, but I ignored it because it was barely light and the storm outside
made his bed too cozy to leave. It would be cozier if he crawled in with me,
but he’s more likely to choke me than hold me.
“What time is it?” I ask.

“Pack your bags,” he says, tossing an envelope into my lap.
I pick it up, still confused. Rain batters the windows, bringing chills
up my arms. I rub at them, trying to slide back under the blankets, but
Maddox pulls them off again.
“Abrasé,” he says, turning away. “I’ve got to take care of some last
minute shit. Jeff will take you to the airport.”
“Are you in some kind of trouble?” I ask, noticing blood on his
jeans and black t-shirt. That’s not unusual. I should have invested in Shout
stocks, since we’re probably their biggest customers by now.
“No trouble,” Maddox rumbles. “Get moving.”
I open the little paper folder and pull out two boarding passes.
“We’re going to… Maine?” I ask, looking from one to the other. “Today?
What about work?”
“Call in sick,” he says, picking up the cordless and tossing it to me.
I barely catch it, still slow with sleep. Being woken up at the ass
crack of dawn and having tickets to a random state on the other side of the
country thrown at me with no explanation isn’t exactly the norm for our
relationship. If he comes in this late, he usually just passes out or rolls me
over for a quick, rough fuck to relieve the stress of his night before he turns
his back and starts snoring. We don’t even go on dates, let alone vacations
together.
“Aww, you’re taking me on a trip?” I ask, smiling up at him. “Does
this mean I’m officially your girlfriend now?”
“Mom made coffee,” he says, turning away. “Don’t take long.”
“What should I pack?”
“I don’t know. Girl shit.”
With that, he disappears from the bedroom. I flop back on the bed
and hold up the boarding passes. A smile creeps across my face as my
excitement builds. It’s not exactly Jamaica, but I’ve never been to the
Atlantic coast. Daddy’s a creature of habit who doesn’t like hassle or
confrontation, and Mama’s a penny-pinching shrew who loudly proclaims
that Alabama beaches are better than Florida anyway. So, that’s where we
went every single year on Spring Break until my senior year.
I can’t complain. It really is beautiful down there, and I’m grateful.
My best friend Jackie couldn’t afford to go anywhere. That’s why she came
with us when my parents invited her along every year.
