IT WASN’T THE FIRST time that Archer pinched himself to stay awake.
The first time, he’d kept his eyes open until close to dawn. Close, but not
quite. The warmth of the bed had lulled him to sleep and erased all the
burdens he carried, wrapping its soft arms around him and dragging him
into the mattress. Only a few short hours later, when Thomas coughed,
Archer opened his eyes again and discovered the hollowness in his chest.
The disappointment had been immeasurable. He’d failed.

--- --- --- --- ---
The second time, a thunderstorm had rendered his plan useless. Thick,
stormy clouds had gathered a little after two in the morning and Archer had
surrendered to the need to shut his eyes.
Archer was ashamed to admit that the second time, the storm had brought
an overwhelming sense of relief. The power to do something had been
taken away from him, and so had been the responsibility, too. At least, that
was what he told himself.
But he knew, deep down, that the storm hadn’t done him any favors. It
had been an excuse. For weeks after that, Archer had believed that he
deserved everything that happened to him. He was a coward who stayed. As
twisted as it seemed, he must have liked it, then.
Not tonight, he thought, taking a deep breath of air through his nose,
trying to be as silent as possible.
He’d packed the bag two days earlier, but neither night felt right. He
didn’t know why, but some nights a feeling of foreboding told him to stay
put. Perhaps it was the same instinct that had trapped him there for six years
of his life.
Not all six were bad, but the last three had erased all the good that had
come before them.
Archer shut his eyes and held his breath. He did not want to think about
any of it. Instead, he channeled his thoughts toward one spot in his mind.
The green door. The paint was peeling off and revealing a sort of cream or
beige coat of paint beneath that the previous owner had had. The green door
on the other side of the house and the key that hung from the nail in the
door frame.
He glanced at the window. The eastern sky was still dark, but if he
looked really hard, he could see that the color was changing. There wasn’t
much he could see through the bare branches of the trees, but the frost that
clung to them had a shine which could have only come from the crack of
dawn. It was a moonless night.
Chills touched Archer’s bones, crawled into his marrow, as he thought of
the frost. He would need his beanie.
