“Another six months?” I feel the reality of the situation crushing me.
“Miss Shaw, we realize it’s an inconvenience but—”
“Thank you. I’ll be in touch.” I rise from my seat as I feel the sting of tears
in my eyes.

--- --- --- --- ---
This is a total disaster. The day that is supposed to be a dream has turned
into a nightmare. I hurry out of the office to my car. Getting in, I exhale, and
let the tears fall. All the plans we had are now ruined. I slam my palm against
the steering wheel.
None of this is what I wanted.
I would’ve married Acyn the day he proposed. Just us two, right there on
the beach.
But we wanted our families to share these moments with us. Now I’m
wondering if that was a good idea. All the plans have become overwhelming,
and it’s feeling like our wedding isn’t really ‘our’ wedding anymore.
Instead of going back to my studio like I had planned, I head home. There
was some work that I wanted to finish up, but I couldn’t concentrate on it
now even if I wanted to. I call my assistant to let her know I won’t be back in
today.
“How’d it go?” Priscilla answers.
“Every direction but right.” I let out a sigh.
“Oh no, what happened?” she asks sympathetically.
“I’d rather not talk about it right now. I wanted to let you know I won’t be
back in the office today.”
“Don’t worry. I got you covered. I’ll finish up what I can and leave the rest
for you to go over tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Priscilla. Enjoy the rest of your day.”
“You try to do the same.”
I end the call, breathing a little easier, knowing I have the rest of the day to
myself. Vision & Vibe is thriving; I opened the studio almost a year ago. I
had to hire an assistant a few months in because, after working with Celeste,
my former boss, on her ad campaign, I was flooded with opportunities.
Shortly after that, Sevyn asked me to go with her to New York Fashion
week. I couldn’t say no to a trip to New York City and an opportunity to
photograph the newest collections from elite designers. It turned into more
than I could’ve imagined.
After fashion week, a designer saw a picture I posted on my Instagram of
her work. She reached out to me and asked if I’d be willing to work on an
upcoming photoshoot with her. I’ve learned to say yes when opportunities
present themselves. It opened the gate for me to do freelance fashion
photography. It gives me a needed change of pace from my day–to–day when
I get to jet off to a fashion shoot.
