“Okay, look smart,” Horace mutters, leaning back in the passenger seat and
struggling to tuck his shirt into his pants. “These people are the poshest of
the posh, Mercy. This is our chance to finally move up into the big
leagues.”
“I think we look just fine,” I reply, checking myself in the mirror
for what must be the tenth time. “I’m sure they’re not that posh…”
“Have you seen the place?” he splutters.

--- --- --- --- ---
As I look out at the huge mansion ahead, I have to admit that he
has a point. Since I arrived in Cornwall, I’ve become accustomed to visiting
a few pretty grand homes, but Gower Grange really takes the biscuit. This
place is colossal, and whereas previously I was skeptical when Horace
claimed the building has more than forty bedrooms, now I have no trouble
believing him at all. In my entire life, I’ve never been inside such a stunning
house, and I have to admit that I’m feeling just a tad intimidated.
Or at least, I would be, if I didn’t have Horace grumbling and
cursing in the seat next to me.
“I’ve been waiting all my life for a chance like this,” he says.
“You have?”
“I’ve always been looked over for this type of house before. These
lords and lordesses never thought I was caught enough.”
“I think it’s -”
“But I’m prepared,” he continues. “I’m ready. I know I can do
this.”
“I have no doubt that you can.”
“Do I look presentable?” he asks as he fixes his tie.
“Yes,” I tell him, hoping that we can finally get out of the car. He’s
been fussing about his tie since I turned up at the office this morning. “You
look fine.”
“Fine’s not good enough!” he hisses, and I’ve honestly never seen
him in such a state before. He even has to remove his glasses for a moment
and wipe sweat from his forehead. “I always get antsy when I’m around
proper rich people. I don’t know why, but I always feel like they’re looking
down on me.”
“Remember, they want to sell this place,” I remind him. “They
need us as much as we need them. Maybe even more.” I pause for a
moment. “Why did they call us, anyway?” I ask. “Don’t take this the wrong
way, but I’m sure there must be estate agents who are more used to handling
massive properties like Gower Grange.”
“I believe the Gower family has more than its fair share of
enemies,” he explains. “They’ve been blackballed by all the posh agencies
in the area.”
“Lucky for them that they’re not on your little blacklist,” I point
out.
He turns and glares at me.
“Mercy, are you going to take this seriously?” he replies. “Because
if you’re not, you might as well just wait in the car. I can crack a window
and leave you in here!”
