Salt stung her eyes. Why was she sweating so much? She could taste it
on her top lip, and feel it trickling between her breasts. She couldn’t
remember where she was. At a party? At somebody’s house? It didn’t stop
her dancing. The music flowed around her, a tide of soft pastel colours
swirling through the air – lemon, violet, sky blue and pink. She stuck out
her tongue to see if she could taste them, but her mouth was too dry. She
didn’t feel at home inside her body.

Where was everyone else? If she was at a party, shouldn’t there be other
people?
Then everything changed. She couldn’t hear music and the colours in
front of her evaporated. She looked around. The room she was in was dark,
lit only by a pair of fat, white candles on the floor. The flames whispered,
casting silver and gold shadows on the walls. She felt damp cold prickling
her skin and her dancing faltered.
She was holding something in her hand. A bottle of water. She
unscrewed the cap and brought it to her lips. It tasted so good, and her
mouth felt softer.
Where was she?
A tiny dark hole. She stumbled to a doorway and then sensed she was
moving into a larger space. But it was all shadows.
She looked around again, turning a full circle as her eyes roamed the
sparkling darkness. Metal and glass, fracturing what little light there was
into tiny rainbows. Huge metal cages, stacked high with green glass bottles.
As she stared at them, they became glinting emerald caverns, deep beneath
the waters of a green and black sea. And she was a mermaid, swimming
between them, searching for something…
She blinked and drank more water. She knew where she was now. In the
vineyard’s main cellar, of course. She’d been here before.
‘Babe? Where are you going?’
Someone pulled her back into the small place where the candlelight
suddenly seemed so much brighter.
The man who tugged on her arm wasn’t who she expected to see. His
footsteps rang loudly on the concrete floor, making her tremble. She
wrapped her arms around her body defensively, belatedly realising she was
completely naked. She looked round frantically for her clothes, but she
couldn’t remember what she’d been wearing. Or how she’d got here.
Fear bit into her gut with sharp teeth.
She heard herself gasp. ‘I want to go home. I don’t feel right.’ She’d
never felt like this before. What was happening to her?
‘You’re tired,’ said the man. ‘Stay here with me.’
As he came closer, she saw he was holding something. A syringe.
‘You need to sleep.’
Panic churned through her, cold as sea water. She tried to back away,
but he grabbed the top of her arm, fingers biting into flesh.
‘There’s nothing to worry about. You need this.’
The colours came back in a starburst, sharp and acidic. The colours of
fear. He raised her arm and she felt a stab in her armpit. A rush of warmth
spread through her.
