Elizabeth Bennet glanced up at the ornately painted ceiling of
Netherfield’s music room, trying to distract herself from the tears
attempting to escape her control. The chamber sat between a large
drawing room and the library—it could be opened up from either side to
enlarge the seating available, should the family choose to hold a musical
evening. But the dining parlours downstairs were the rooms required for
today’s celebrations, and it was here they had come to say their farewells in
privacy. Jane, surely the most beautiful bride in the world, beamed a smile
of radiant happiness.

In a few minutes, Jane would be donning one of her new carriage
dresses and leaving behind their sisterhood forever—although Elizabeth
knew she was surely being maudlin and foolish to consider it so. But the
lump in her throat would not shrink, no matter her joy in the occasion.
“Oh, Lizzy, you must not be sad. We will only be away for a month or
two at most, and I will write often. We will first visit Mr Bingley’s maternal

on Mr Bingley’s face when he sees how fetching you appear in the blue
merino.”
Jane impulsively reached for Elizabeth. “Oh, Lizzy, why am I so happy?
I do not deserve it, but I promise, everything will be wonderful, wonderful
for our whole lives.”
Elizabeth embraced her sister tightly, heedless of wrinkles to her own
new gown. It was at this very moment that sounds from the adjoining
drawing room reached them.
“Oh, Mr Darcy!” came a voice that could only be Louisa Hurst’s. “This
is an occasion which defies explanation.”
“If only you had not departed so hastily and stayed away so long!”
Caroline Bingley enjoined.
“It could not be helped,” said the low, cold, formal voice of Bingley’s
friend.
“This wedding is a tragedy and nothing less,” Miss Bingley continued.
“I should be dressed in mourning crape.”
“Bingley suffered a rejection from the woman he loved,” Mr Darcy
opined. “I suppose it made him vulnerable to the affections of another,
encouraging him to pursue the first female who looked amiably upon him,
without giving himself time to heal from his disappointment. It is certainly
an unfortunate match, in comparison.”
“I never saw him so happy as when he was courting Miss NewellStickney.” Caroline sighed. “I know her father’s refusal to consider his suit
was a very great disappointment to her—the man is beyond proud, and him
only a baronet’s son. I have heard she regrets her father’s opinions very
