Lily
Happy thirtieth birthday, Lily!
You’re fired.
After ten years of being polite, friendly, and even cheerful when I
have somebody yelling at me about the quality of service they received, this
is how it ends? A banker’s box filled with my few personal belongings: my
red-shoe tape dispenser, a few squishy tension balls that got me through the
more difficult days, my favorite pens, my latest—and probably the most
expensive—notebook I’ve ever owned, because I like the weight of the
paper and the way a good gel pen feels gliding across the page, and my
headset. It’s been on my ears for years; I’m not leaving it behind. I don’t
have a single family photo because we’re not always on speaking terms.

But I do have a picture of me with the dog I had growing up, a Golden
Retriever named King. The only one who loved me unconditionally during
my teen years and had an interesting penchant for identifying which boys
stood a chance, and which didn’t. I always trusted his instinct. I wish he
were still around.
My boss, Mr. Finch, didn’t say those exact words, he tried to pretty
them up—a little.
“Lily,” he began when he called me into his office not long after I
arrived on this wet, Manhattan Monday morning in late April, his voice
devoid of any warmth or emotion—two things I sorely needed following
the ride into the office. My carefully selected birthday outfit is drenched
after the bus I’d missed by mere seconds raced through a puddle while I ran
alongside it, waving, screaming, and begging it to stop. “As you know,
Liberty Line Telecommunications has been facing some financial
challenges lately. In order to stay afloat, we’ve had to make some difficult
decisions.”
Mr. Finch is a tall, balding man with a perpetual frown and the coldest
brown eyes that seem to bore straight into your soul. I didn’t even know
that was possible. Typically, brown eyes are so warm, like melted chocolate
drizzled over your favorite cheesecake. I’ve rarely had to deal with Norman
Finch directly during my time here, and true to form, every single one of
them has left me shaking in the knees.
Today is no different.
“Unfortunately,” he continued, “it has become necessary to downsize
our workforce. Effective immediately, your position is being eliminated,
and your employment with Liberty Line Telecommunications is
terminated.”
I stood gaping at him, hoping the words coming from between his thin
lips were false, a dream, my imagination. But no. He handed me the formal
letter of termination before I left his office.
As I walked back to my workstation, the familiar buzz of ringing
phones, fingers tapping wildly on keyboards, and colleagues engaging in
over-the-cubicle-wall conversations didn’t penetrate the fog surrounding
me. I did notice a few questioning glances, but I ignored them.
Despite the hectic environment, I’ve always thrived on the energy and
excitement of helping customers navigate their telecommunication needs.
