TRIPP
BASEBALL IS MY LIFE. ALWAYS HAS BEEN.
Don’t get me wrong, other sports are great too, there’s just something
about being at Camden Yards that makes me feel like a kid again. I’ve been
an Orioles fan my entire life. Nowadays, I have an additional reason to get
excited when I look around this place—new clients, which means money.
It’s almost impossible to ignore that aspect, even tonight, when Decker
Collins is in town with me, waiting back at our seats. We’ve been friends
since college, and this should be one hundred percent leisure, but he gets it.
Nobody understands better than him. Along with everyone else in this
stadium, I’m here to see Owen Holmes.

--- --- --- --- ---
Oh yes, the five-tool monster I’ve spent months trying to sign, and years
working for. He’s at the forefront of my mind as I wait in line for beer up on
the concourse.
After I hear the notorious crack of a wooden bat, a roar breaks out behind
me. Anyone who knows anything about baseball games recognizes this
sequence of events instantaneously. I turn in time to see the foul ball soaring
through the air, headed right next to me. Gloves and hands fly up. As if
transported back to my childhood, everything around me fades away and I
start drifting on a perfect angle to intercept it before anyone else.
It’s all instinct. My speed accelerates as it floats through the air, like I’ve
done this a thousand times, my eyes locked onto the seams rotating. I extend
both hands as all the sounds around me fade away, and I realize my wallet is
somewhere back near the beer line. Just as my fingertips are where they need
to be, and the ball lands safely in my clutches…
Bam!
I pull the ball into my chest, securing it tightly, and the contact spins me
sideways and straight into a concrete wall, where my shoulder takes most of
the force from the collision. Not going to lie, I’m getting a little older,
pushing forty. I’ll feel that shit tomorrow, but it’ll be worth it. I don’t think
I’ve caught a foul ball here since I was probably fourteen.
Obviously, the first thing I do, is look the ball over, and think holy shit,
Decker won’t believe this. I’m a grown man, so is he, and I can still already
see it playing out in my mind. Something about baseball transports everyone
involved straight back to their childhood.
As my senses come back to me, and my ears begin to work again, I
realize my shirt is wet. Then, it dawns on me that I clearly just leveled
someone, and since I hadn’t yet received any beers, I must have…
“Hey, asshole!”
My eyes dart around in front of me while I try to process everything, and
then realize the sound came from down below, obviously where it should’ve
come from. At least they called me an asshole, so I know it’s not a child, and
it sounded female. My eyes drift down as I naturally head that way to make
sure she’s okay.
“I’m sorry.” I already have a hand out before my eyes have even made it
to her.
