GREER
I can’t tell what’s louder—the roaring of the nightmares pouring through
the rift or the ringing in my ears. Bastian fled through the very same
portal only moments ago.
“Greer!” Valen’s voice sounds distorted, like it’s underwater. “Get up and
fight!”
Bastian betrayed us. He betrayed me.
My heart stutters.
I’ve only known him for a few days, but part of me had grown to trust
him. I believed him when he said he wanted to be with me.
The flames along my sword wink out.
My chest aches.
I’m a fool. A desperate, lonely fool.
“Greer!” Dane’s roar and Rippley’s screams sound like they’re miles
away. But my mother’s voice hisses in my ear, loud and all too clear.
You’re such a disappointment.
My heart hardens.
Fuck all of this. Slayer fire roars back to life, licking along my silver
sword, singeing the grass beneath it as I push up off my knees.
“Greer, to your left.”
I swing my sword out at Valen’s shout, my blade slicing across the belly
of a nightmare whose form is still rippling. I’m sure my mind is a
smorgasbord of pain and trauma right now. It’s probably struggling to decide
which is the most potent.
Join the club.
Spinning, I pull the silver dagger from my back with my left hand, fire
igniting along the deadly edge, and slice it across the nightmare’s back. It
screeches so loudly I wince. Facing it now, I scream right back, hacking and
stabbing at it again and again until my fire and the silver of the blades reduce
it to nothing more than foul smoke and ash.
“Behind you,” Valen shouts, and I thrust my sword back without even
looking.
A nightmare bellows, and I wince as its claws rip across my shoulder,
shredding my clothes. Warm blood drips down my back, and my rage grows.
Turning, I stab the nightmare in the heart. Or where its heart should be. I
actually have no idea what kind of anatomy these monsters have.
“I am so tired”—I pull the dagger out of its chest before slamming it
down into the fleshy part of its shoulder—“of being stabbed”—I narrowly
dodge another swipe of its claws as I slide my burning sword from its hide,
lifting it above my head—“in the back!” Ichor sprays my face as I hack the
thing’s head off and it dissipates into nothing more than wisps of smoke.
A familiar roar cleaves my chest, and my stomach lurches when I see
Dane in bear form trying to protect a sobbing Rippley from four nightmares.
One looks like his mom again, one looks like a zombie version of me—which
makes me shudder—but the other two look like a normal man and woman.
Except that they’re completely naked. My steps falter when I see the man
nightmare tweak the naked female nightmare’s nipple. She grabs his very
hard cock and drops to her knees.
The fuck?
Rippley howls as if the things are carving up her insides, tears tracking
down her face, and it clicks. The nightmares are taking on the form of her
shitty cheating ex and his side hoe. I throw up in my mouth a little when the
nightmare that looks like a woman starts slobbing the guy’s knob.
Gross.
