SIX MONTHS AGO
ara Mitchell looked at her watch for probably the
hundredth time that night. Her back ached, her feet
hurt, and a migraine was nagging at the base of her neck.
The Country Cookin’ Diner had been packed all night long.
She felt as though she had been running a marathon for the
last four hours straight.

Trina, another waitress at the club, smiled wearily at
Sara. The normally smiling, bubbly woman looked like she
was about to fall over from exhaustion.
“What a night, huh?” Trina asked. “I’m pretty sure that
every single person who lives within a five-mile radius came
in tonight and brought their family from the rest of the
state.”
“I know, right,” Sara said. “At least they were in the
tipping mood.”
“True enough,
” Trina said. “Are you coming back next
semester?”
Sara had been working her way through law school. She
would take a semester off to work full time and save up
enough money for tuition and then go back to school the
following semester. Sara always joked that she would
manage to get her law degree by the time that she was
eighty, even though she was only twenty-two.
“Part time. I’ll study in between running from one table
to the next,” she joked.
Her shift finally ended. Although the diner stayed open
twenty-four hours a day, Sara never worked the overnight
shift. It got too slow and she would get bored. Then, the time
dragged on.
The night air was brisk, but not too frigid. It would take
longer for her to get home if she took the bus, and taxis were
simply too expensive. She always walked home unless it was
so cold outside that a person would get frostbite after being
outside for five minutes.
She pulled out her taser and pulled her purse on
underneath her coat, and then buttoned it. Not only would
that keep her purse out of sight, but Sara hoped that it would
make her less of a target if she didn’t appear to have
anything. She had a secret pocket in the lining of her coat
where she always carried her cash in, so even if she was
mugged, the criminal wouldn’t get a whole lot.
As she exited the diner, Sara hesitated. She was really
tired and she hurt all over. Sara could take the long way, the
safer way home. Her other option was to take a shortcut in
the alley. Even though it was relatively safe in this part of
New York, there was still enough crime to make her hesitate.
However, tiredness won.
“Be safe tonight,” Trina said. “It’s a full moon out, and
you know how the crazies love to go nuts when she is out.”
“That’s just an older superstition,
” Sara said. “But I’ll be
careful. You be safe, too.”
